Ilustration

“Hello, everyone! Good evening, and welcome to Public Opinion.

Folks, when you hear the phrase Youth Pledge, what is the very first thing that crosses your mind? A flag ceremony? Memorizing texts from a dusty history textbook? Or simply a long weekend that we all look forward to?.

Tonight, we are not going to discuss the Youth Pledge in a rigid, academic way. We want to deconstruct this sacred vow of October 28, 1928, not as a relic of the past, but as a super-visionary social contract. Deep within its essence, lies a noble code of ethics that weaves together harmony, togetherness, empathy, security, compassion, and a profound sense of belonging into our national identity.

So, let us take a ride in our time machine and unpack its meaning: the past, the present, and the future!”

🕒 The Past: When Ego Was Dismantled by a “Sense of Belonging”

“Imagine the atmosphere in 1928. Geopolitically speaking, Indonesia did not even exist yet. What existed was a fragmented archipelago of young intellectuals from various regional organizations—Jong Java, Jong Sumatranen Bond, Jong Celebes—whose regional egos were still incredibly thick. But this is exactly where their genius shines.

They engaged in a profound deconstruction of the ego. They realized that if they fought in isolation, they would remain just scattered crumbs easily crushed by colonial powers. Ultimately, a consensus of togetherness was born.

And do you know what the highest proof of empathy was back then? They mutually agreed to elevate the Malay language into Indonesian—instead of Javanese, which statistically had the vast majority of native speakers. That was a magnificent act of cultural diplomacy to maintain the stability of their togetherness, ensuring that no single group felt dominated. From that pivotal moment, the crystallization of a true sense of ownership—a profound sense of belonging toward a home called Indonesia—officially began, shaping our very national identity.”

📱 The Present: Testing “Harmony” and “Compassion” in the Digital Disruption

“Now, let us leap into our current era. An era of technological disruption, a post-truth world. Today, our adversaries are no longer colonizers with rifles, but our very own thumbs on social media. Political polarization, ideological friction, and social media drama can easily ignite conflicts.

So, what is the meaning of the Youth Pledge today? It means the re-actualization of harmony and digital empathy. The intellect of today’s youth is tested by their ability to filter information before sharing it. It is about guarding our words and our typing to protect the psychological security of society from hoaxes and hate speech.

Yet, on the flip side, I am immensely proud to witness how compassion manifests among today’s youth. When an ecological crisis hits or a disaster strikes a remote corner of the country, bypassing all barriers of ethnicity or religion, the youth immediately initiate cyber movements, crowdfund, and take direct action on the ground. The empathy of 1928 is very much alive; it has simply upgraded its medium!”

🚀 The Future: A Compass to Navigate Global Polarization

“Then, what about the future? We are marching toward a golden era amid the onslaught of Artificial Intelligence, global climate crises, and borderless cultural assimilation. If we do not possess deep roots, we will drift away.

In the future, our sense of belonging must evolve into a form of sustainable belonging. Safeguarding our homeland will mean securing food sustainability, advocating for climate justice, and preserving our natural heritage. The togetherness and harmony that we have nurtured for centuries will become our ultimate social capital on the global stage. We will lead international collaborations while carrying our proudest asset: our collective national identity rooted in mutual cooperation.”

Conclusion

“So, ladies and gentlemen… the Youth Pledge was never about forced uniformity; it was about creating a beautiful symphony above our diversity. The structure of this nation is supported by the pillars of harmony and empathy, strengthened by togetherness and compassion, and sheltered by a sense of belonging that breeds security for us all.

Our duty as the intellectual collective today is not to formulate a new pledge, but to ensure that the flame of the original vow keeps burning brightly in our daily lives.

Thank you, see you on the next edition of Public Opinion, good night, and stay united!”
