JAKARTA TIMUR, bhayaksa.net— A black Suzuki Carry Futura minivan was completely gutted by fire on Jalan Angkasa, Halim Perdanakusuma Village, Makasar District, East Jakarta, right in front of the Oikoumene Church. The incident, which occurred on Thursday (10/15/2026) afternoon, triggered widespread panic as the vehicle was transporting hundreds of liters of highly flammable liquid fuel.
East Jakarta Metropolitan Police Public Relations Officer, Police Assistant Commissioner Made Budi, confirmed that the vehicle was carrying dozens of jerry cans filled with kerosene when the fire broke out.
“Based on the driver’s statement, the burning vehicle contained 30 jerry cans. Each jerry can held 30 liters, making a total cargo of 900 liters of kerosene,” ACP Made Budi told reporters.
The incident began at around 4:30 PM local time when the vehicle, driven by a man identified only by his initial K, was traveling from the direction of Halim Perdanakusuma Airport toward the Kebon Pala area. However, upon arriving in front of the Oikoumene Church, witnesses and the driver noticed an anomaly with the vehicle.
“When it reached the front of the Oikoumene Church, sparks began flying from the car’s exhaust pipe,” Made Budi explained.
Seeing the sparks quickly grow larger at the rear, the driver panicked. In the heat of the emergency, he instinctively turned the steering wheel and crashed into a public street lighting pole on the side of Jalan Angkasa. The flames erupted instantly, engulfing the entire vehicle and sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky.
Police received reports from local residents at 4:50 PM and immediately coordinated with firefighting teams. A total of five fire engines from a joint task force consisting of the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) and the Kebon Pala Fire Department were dispatched to the scene to extinguish the blaze.
The joint personnel worked hard to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading to other public facilities. Thanks to their rapid response, the raging fire was completely extinguished by 5:00 PM.
Police confirmed that there were no fatalities or injuries in the incident. The driver managed to escape the vehicle safely before the flames consumed it entirely.
Once the fire was put out, the charred remains of the vehicle were immediately cleared using a towing truck to restore normal traffic flow. Meanwhile, both the driver and the vehicle have been taken and secured at the Air Force Military Police Command (Satpom TNI AU) for further questioning regarding the permits for transporting the fuel.
As of publication time, the total material losses resulting from the fire are still being calculated by the relevant authorities.
