Indonesia’s rising chess prodigies, International Master (IM) Satria Duta Cahaya and Woman International Master (WIM) Laysa Latifah, pushed their tactical limits in a high-stakes thriller, ultimately securing crucial draws to keep the host nation’s hopes alive.
Playing with the white pieces in front of a home crowd, the young Indonesian phenom IM Satria Duta Cahaya (Elo rating 2412) entered the arena on a mission. Duta was hunting for a decisive victory to bounce back from a heartbreaking loss in Round 2 caused by severe time trouble. From the very first moves of the opening, Duta went on the offensive, steering the game into an aggressive, sharp territory.
However, his opponent—Vietnam’s boy wonder, IM Dau Khuong Duy (Elo rating 2509)—proved exactly why he is the heavily favored grandmaster-in-the-making. Khuong Duy put on a masterclass in defensive calculation. Instead of crumbling under Duta’s relentless pressure, the Vietnamese prodigy tactically defused every threat, steering the board into an inescapable draw.
Reflecting on the exhausting match, Duta transparently broke down the minor slip-up that complicated his path to victory.
“I mixed up the move order during the opening phase,” Duta admitted to reporters post-match. “That tiny misstep gave him an unexpected positional edge to dictate the tempo and force the draw.”
Laysa Latifah Tames the Kazakh Powerhouse
The drama was equally palpable over on the women’s board. WIM Laysa Latifah (Elo rating 2213) faced a daunting challenge against Kazakhstan’s brick wall, Woman Grandmaster (WGM) Xeniya Balabayeva, who held a massive rating advantage at 2384.
Knowing she was up against deep international experience, Latifah executed a flawless strategy rooted in patience and defensive discipline. The grueling battle stretched over three hours as both players traded pieces with extreme caution. Balabayeva repeatedly attempted to crack Latifah’s kingside defense, but the Indonesian star neutralized every assault with sharp counter-punches, securing a hard-fought draw.
With Round 3 in the books, Team Indonesia still trails in the International Duel Match standings. Both Duta and Latifah currently sit at a combined 1.0 point (courtesy of two draws and one loss). Meanwhile, the international duo of Dau Khuong Duy and Xeniya Balabayeva maintains the lead with 2.0 points each.
The Race is Far From Over: Rapid & Blitz Sprints Ahead
According to the official regulations from the Indonesian Chess Federation (PB PERCASI), this 16th edition of the festival’s international match is a multi-format marathon. The 10-round showdown combines three distinct disciplines: 4 classical matches, 2 rapid games, and 4 blitz sprints.
With the point margins still remarkably tight, the dynamic scoring system of the upcoming rapid and blitz phases leaves the door wide open for the Indonesian duo to mount an epic comeback and snatch the championship title.
The battle in Senayan resumes tomorrow morning with the fourth and final classical round. It will be a packed schedule for the players, as the classical curtain-closer in the morning session will be immediately followed by the first two rounds of rapid chess in the afternoon.
