JAMBI, bhayaksa.net – A thick blanket of toxic haze from ongoing forest and land fires (karhutla) continues to choke the skies over Jambi City as of Friday, September 4, 2026. In response to the worsening air quality—which remains in the “Very Unhealthy” category—the Jambi City Government has taken swift preventive action to protect local residents, particularly school-aged children.
According to data from the local air quality monitoring station in Paal Lima, the Air Pollution Index (ISPU) in Jambi City spiked to an alarming 210 during the morning hours. Local residents have reported a pungent, burning smell piercing the air, with fine ash particles from the wildfires seeping directly into their homes.
Facing this increasingly hazardous situation, the Jambi City Government has officially extended its remote learning policy (PJJ). Online classes from home will remain in effect through today, Friday, September 4, 2026. This directive is mandated under Jambi City Mayor’s Circular Letter Number 25 of 2026, applicable to all educational levels, including preschool, kindergarten, elementary, and middle schools.
“This tactical move is part of the government’s commitment to prioritizing the health and safety of our children by shielding them from direct exposure to toxic smoke,” stated a spokesperson for the Jambi City Government in an official release.
In addition to shifting school activities online, the Jambi City Health Office has placed all community health centers (Puskesmas) on high alert to anticipate a potential surge in Acute Respiratory Infections (ISPA). At least 6,800 boxes of face masks have been distributed to various healthcare facilities for mass distribution to citizens in need.
City officials are strongly urging residents to restrict outdoor activities. If going outside is absolutely necessary, citizens are highly advised to wear standard health masks. For those who spot new fire hotspots or require urgent assistance, the Jambi Emergency Call Center 112 remains fully operational 24 hours a day.
Given that the current air pollution is largely driven by smoke blowing in from surrounding areas, the Jambi City Government continues to coordinate closely with the Jambi Province Karhutla Task Force, the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the National Police (Polri), and the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) to accelerate firefighting operations in the affected zones.
