SURABAYA, bhayaksa.net—- Officers at the Class I Surabaya Correctional Institution (Lapas) in Porong, Sidoarjo, successfully foiled a bold attempt to smuggle suspected methamphetamine with a total gross weight of 17.11 grams. This illicit modus operandi was highly unusual, as the contraband was deliberately hidden inside pieces of crispy fried chicken brought by a visitor on Tuesday afternoon, October 6, 2026.
The incident began when frontline enforcement officers at the baggage inspection desk conducted routine checks and early detection procedures on items brought for face-to-face visits. The officers’ attention was drawn to an elderly woman identified by her initials AM (62), a resident of Surabaya, who was planning to visit her son. Upon carefully inspecting the fast-food package carried by AM, officers grew suspicious after noticing that several pieces of fried chicken had an unnatural shape, texture, and a deep, unusual color compared to regular fried chicken. Officers then sliced open the chicken meat and discovered four small plastic clip bags containing white meth crystals, weighing 4.12 grams, 4.83 grams, 3.78 grams, and 4.24 grams respectively.
The Head of Class I Surabaya Lapas, Sohibur Rachman, confirmed the incident and provided an official statement regarding the ongoing legal investigation into the perpetrators inside the detention facility.
“Investigators have questioned three inmates, including the one suspected of arranging the delivery of the meth,” Sohibur Rachman stated when confirmed by the media on Thursday (10/8/2026).
From the initial intensive investigation, officers uncovered the involvement of three inmates serving sentences for narcotics offenses: BSN (21)—AM’s biological son who is serving an 8-year prison term—alongside MAB (28) and DD (28), both of whom were sentenced to 7 years in prison. The inmate identified as DD reportedly coordinated communications with an outside network to pack the meth inside the food, while AM is strongly suspected of being exploited without knowing the true contents of what she was carrying.
The Head of the Correctional Institution Security Unit (Ka KPLP), Anak Agung Gde Joni Purnama Putera, representing Warden Sohibur Rachman, emphasized his institution’s commitment to breaking the chain of illicit drug trafficking.
“The eradication of narcotics is part of the implementation of the 15 Action Programs of the Minister of Immigration and Correctional Affairs, specifically to realize drug-free prisons and detention centers. We will continue to tighten surveillance because smuggling methods keep evolving and becoming more diverse,” Anak Agung Gde Joni asserted.
As a firm and legally accountable law enforcement measure, the internal security of Surabaya Lapas immediately coordinated closely with the local police. All psychotropic evidence, along with the three implicated inmates and the courier AM, have now been officially handed over to the Satresnarkoba Polresta Sidoarjo for further criminal investigation and the revocation of their remission rights. This bust marks the 11th successful smuggling interception by Surabaya Lapas officers throughout the year 2026.
