In a secluded corner of Tanjung Lumut, within the Talang Bakung sub-district of Jambi, stands the crumbling skeletal remains of a house slowly being swallowed by the dense, suffocating embrace of wild vegetation. Decades ago, this structure was designed to be a sturdy, welcoming home. Today, it presents a chilling spectacle: concrete walls blackened by years of deep moisture, exposed red bricks protruding like fractured bones, and a carpet of rotting leaves decaying upon the damp earth.

For the locals who pass by as the night creeps in, this ruined house possesses a powerful, almost magnetic supernatural aura. Beneath its menacing appearance lies a dark secret whispered from mouth to mouth—a tale of an eternal, unfinished vigil.

The real house

A Promise Frozen in Time

The tragic abandonment of this house dates back to the early 1980s. The building was meant to be a modest haven, built by a prosperous young man for his fiancée—a local maiden renowned for her striking beauty, gentle demeanor, and her fondness for wearing white dresses. This joy vanished in a single moment when the young man was killed in a violent accident outside the city, just weeks before their wedding day.

From that day forward, the woman’s sanity seemed to crumble alongside her dreams. Day after day, from sunset until the dead of night, she was often seen sitting alone on the threshold of the half-finished house. Clad in her white bridal gown, she would stare blankly down the empty road, waiting for a lover who would never return from the grave.

She eventually passed away in utter isolation, leaving the house unfinished and forsaken by her heirs. The immense sorrow, despair, and unfulfilled longing are believed to have been permanently imprinted upon the soil and the walls, manifesting into the ethereal entity that now claims the ruins.

A Midnight Encounter: The Watchman’s Witness

Although this entity is known to never be malicious or disruptive, her presence in the pitch black of night is enough to send a violent shiver down anyone’s spine. Aris (26), a local youth who regularly patrols the neighborhood during night watch, recounted his most vivid spiritual encounter.

“It was around two in the morning, and the temperature had suddenly plummeted, turning piercingly cold,” Aris recalled with a grim expression. “As we walked past the alley facing the ruins, the scent of frangipani flowers mingled with the stench of wet earth filled the air. I shone my flashlight through a gap in the shattered doorway.”

There, in the center of a room where wild roots had breached the windows, stood a woman. Her face was incredibly beautiful yet deathly pale, framed by long, raven-black hair cascading down to her waist. What caught his breath was her attire—a pristine white dress completely untouched by stain or soil, standing in stark contrast to the blackened, moss-covered walls and the littered debris around her.

Instead of screaming, laughing hysterically, or lunging forward like a typical aggressive spirit, the figure remained completely still. She stared straight through the darkness with a gentle, profound sadness pooling in her eyes. “We were completely frozen in place, unable to move. As we tried to step backward slowly, her figure began to dissolve, fading into the brick wall like mist carried away by the wind,” Aris added.

Eternal Silence Amidst the Debris

Today, the entire roof has collapsed, exposing the dark night sky directly over what used to be the bedrooms. Yet for the entity trapped within, time and space seem to stand still. In a different dimension, the house perhaps remains as grand and intact as it was decades ago.

She chooses to be a silent guardian. She harbors no desire to harm the living who pass by, for her entire existence is consumed by a single purpose: faithfully keeping a long-lost promise that time left behind in the soil of Tanjung Lumut.
