SYDNEY,bhayaksa.net— Severe operational constraints and a critical shortage of Air Traffic Control (ATC) staff triggered widespread chaos at Sydney Airport on Saturday (8/8/2026), leaving over 150 domestic and international flights delayed.
The disruptions severely hit Australia’s busiest aviation hub, causing ripple effects across the country’s entire flight network. National carrier Qantas took the hardest blow, with at least 95 of its scheduled flights delayed, while Virgin Australia and several international airlines also reported major schedule disruptions.
An official spokesperson for Sydney Airport confirmed that Airservices Australia—the government enterprise responsible for managing the nation’s airspace—was forced to enforce strict aircraft movement restrictions due to the shortage of duty controllers.
”We urge passengers to contact their respective airlines directly to obtain the latest updates regarding their flight schedules,” the Sydney Airport spokesperson stated on Saturday, as reported by news agency AAP.
To maintain safety standards under reduced staffing levels, Airservices Australia implemented air traffic flow management protocols, including extending departure intervals between aircraft. A spokesperson for the agency acknowledged that while these measures are necessary for safe operations, they inevitably lead to flight delays.
Airservices Australia added that efforts are underway to ramp up controller training programs and reform rostering practices to address rigid scheduling issues that currently limit workforce availability.
However, airline representatives expressed mounting frustration over the chronic nature of the crisis. Stephen Beckett, CEO of Airlines for Australia and New Zealand, criticized Airservices Australia for failing to maintain adequate tower staffing for three consecutive days.
”They keep telling us that they have recruited enough people to meet operational needs. If that is truly the case, why does this issue keep happening?” Beckett told the ABC, adding that understaffing in control towers has been a persistent problem for years.
As air traffic controllers work through the backlog, passengers traveling through Sydney are advised to check flight statuses online before heading to the airport.
