CILEGON, bhayaksa.net – Early mental fortitude and character development are vital to nurturing a resilient future generation. This core message was highlighted by the Banten Provincial Government at the official opening of the 2026 Banten Provincial Chess Championship (Kejurprov Catur), held at Sosoro Mall Merak, Cilegon, on Saturday (8/8/2026).
Officially inaugurating the event, Vice Governor Dr. H. R. Achmad Dimyati Natakusumah urged all stakeholders to actively participate in developing young chess talent from an early age.
Dimyati emphasized that continuous support across all sectors is essential to elevating the stature and competitive edge of chess players throughout Banten Province on broader stages.
The Pawn Philosophy: Consistency Path to Success
Addressing hundreds of participants and officials, Dimyati explained that chess is far more than a tactical game—it is an effective medium for character building. Through chess, young minds are trained to think critically, remain composed, and persevere under pressure.
”In chess, we learn how to withstand attacks, make long-term calculated moves, and reinforce our defense,” Dimyati stated.
He also shared a thoughtful metaphor regarding the pawn—the smallest piece on the board—which carries a profound lesson for youth development.
”Chess teaches us how a pawn, despite starting with limited movement, can achieve any role it aspires to through consistency and determination,” he highlighted.
Dimyati expressed optimism that instilling these values early will not only yield talented new grandmasters for Banten, but also mold a tough, focused generation equipped for future challenges.
Hundreds of Competitors Across 8 Regencies and Cities
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Indonesian Chess Association (Percasi) Cilegon Chapter, Hasan Saidan, noted the overwhelming community enthusiasm for this year’s tournament.
”This provincial-level championship features hundreds of athletes representing all eight regencies and cities in Banten, spanning age groups from 7 to 19 years old, as well as open senior and veteran divisions,” Saidan explained.
Through strong collaboration between the Banten Provincial Government, Percasi, community groups, and private partners, the championship serves as a key talent pipeline to discover top-tier players capable of representing Banten at national and international levels.
