SYDNEY, bhayaksa.net – The Australian stock market wrapped up the week on a high note, posting solid gains at Friday’s closing session (8/28/2026). The S&P/ASX 200 benchmark index advanced 54.1 points, or 0.6 percent, to finish at 9,092.30. This rebound successfully snapped a red streak that had dragged local equities down for two consecutive weeks.

Investor confidence on the trading floor was reignited by two core catalysts: the spillover effect of tech giant Nvidia’s impressive Wall Street earnings and robust global metal commodity prices.

Bullish Momentum in Tech and AI

The tech sector emerged as the star performer on the Australian bourse today, soaring by a massive 2,31 percent. Market sentiment strengthened following Nvidia’s better-than-expected financial results, confirming that global capital expenditure on Artificial Intelligence (AI) infrastructure remains highly aggressive. Local tech stocks mirrored the gains, with Xero (XRO) skyrocketing 7.62 percent and Life360 (360) climbing 5.01 percent.

Mining Sector Does the Heavy Lifting

In addition to tech, the materials and mining sectors showed significant strength. Surging international gold and copper prices provided a shot of adrenaline to major Australian miners. The ASX Materials index closed nearly 1 percent higher, firmly anchoring the broader market in positive territory throughout the day.

Shrugging Off RBA Rate Hike Fears

Interestingly, today’s broad buying spree saw investors overlook immediate domestic headwinds. Earlier in the week, hotter-than-expected July inflation data sparked fears that Australia’s central bank, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), might hike cash rates again at its upcoming September meeting.

“The market was somewhat shaky early in the week due to inflation anxieties, but optimism from the global tech sector and resilient commodity prices managed to turn things around ahead of the weekend,” a market analyst noted in a closing wrap-up today.

In currency markets, the upbeat economic outlook also boosted the local currency, with the Australian Dollar (AUD) appreciating to 71.95 U.S. cents.
